Summary: The profession of operations management is constantly envolving as new technologies, innovativeideas, and increasing competition enter the global picture. Since the eleventh edition we have monitored events and developments in operations management and made the twelfth edition the most relevant text to date for all business students regardless of their major. We have added three new sections dealing with the latest in new technology and its effects on the operations of a firm. In Chapter 1, we discuss the Internet of Things (IoT). In Chapter 8, the use of big data for forecasting demand is shown to have great potential for operations management. Finally, Chapter 14, discusses how a disruptive technology such as additive manufacturing (AM) can reduce material inputs and make supply chains more flexible. -- P. xvii
